Freelance rate calculator

Build a rate from your income goal, realistic working capacity, business expenses and a transparent safety buffer.

What you want to pay yourself before this calculator's business-cost adjustment.
Method: required revenue = (income goal + business expenses) × (1 + buffer). Rate = required revenue ÷ realistic billable hours. This keeps the math visible and avoids pretending taxes are a universal fixed rate.

How the freelance rate calculator works

The calculator first estimates your sellable capacity. Working weeks and hours per week are reduced by your billable share because administration, sales, learning, marketing and recovery time are real parts of running an independent business.

It then adds annual business expenses and applies the safety-buffer percentage as a transparent markup. The result is divided by billable hours to produce a starting hourly rate.

Why billable share matters

If you work 32 hours a week but can only sell 65% of that time, pricing yourself as if all 32 hours were billable will understate the rate your business needs.
